Roofing Shingles: Architectural vs 3-Tab

Three-Tab. Architectural. Do these terms bring forth a sense of confusion? We get it. The styles of roofing can be quite the conundrum when you already have so many other things on your mind. We’re here to make it easier for you.

Here’s a breakdown of the two main residential roofing materials:

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles are one of the most preferred shingles homeowners choose. By going this route, you’re sure to maintain or raise the property value of your home. Also known as dimensional or laminate shingles, these create a multi-dimensional look to a home’s roof since it’s composed of differing sized shingles. Due to their heavy weight and composition, they are much more durable than 3-tab shingles. You won’t find many maintained roofs like these with empty patches! These are rated to resist high speed winds and often have an extensive warranty. Homestar exclusively installs the GAF roofing system with the additional Gold Pledge Warranty and is the only certified installer of the complete GAF roofing system

Three-Tab Shingles

Weighing less than architectural shingles, the three-tab shingles are increasingly less popular with homeowners. These come in only one size and one shape and lay in one layer. They are the simplest of roofing shingles and also cost less than other alternatives. Three-tab shingles have a significantly shorter life span and therefore need to be replaced more often – They also have a much shorter warranty due to the ease of damage that can occur with high wind speed.

If you’re unsure of which roof style suits your needs, we offer free consultations to help you determine the style, the colour, and the installation. Financing options are also available.
