Maintaining your driveway can save you thousands of dollars, however, this is something that many homeowners overlook. To ensure long lasting asphalt, a little bit of maintenance goes a long way.


Seal-coating

Asphalt doesn’t just take care of itself. It has many enemies that it needs help defending against. UV-rays, water, petroleum and other oil-based materials can all cause damage to your driveway. The purpose of seal-coating is to protect the asphalt from damage and premature aging.

Ideally, your driveway should have a seal-coat applied once every two years. While you think these costs are inconvenient and costly, the reality is, is this maintenance costs much less than it would be to repair your driveway from UV damage or water seeping into cracks causing even more damage.


Crack Filling

Many think small cracking in asphalt is nothing to worry about. On the contrary, these little cracks can lead to much bigger issues. Moisture seeps down into cracks, weakens the base of the asphalt, causes little cracks to become big ones and leads to potholes.

As soon as you see a crack in your driveway, have it filled to avoid long-term damage. The sooner you have it filled, the less it will cost you than a major repair job or replacement.


Oil Leaks

Asphalt is an oil-based product. While some would think that oil leaks aren’t a big deal because of this, other oily products can cause the asphalt to dissolve. So, if your car or truck has a leak, don’t park on the driveway until you get it fixed. If you spill oil or gas on it, be sure to clean it up immediately to avoid dissolving damage.
